LBI Commemorative 18 miler
My goal was to run marathon goal pace of 2.03.36- I ended up running:

Very pleased with the overall results. Conditions in the 60’s, very sunny and light NW wind which was only a mild factor.
The race was as straight a race as I have ever run especially for that length of race. South to North with only a final left turn towards the Barnegat Lighthouse finish area with ¼ mile to go. The goal was to start relaxed and run marathon goal pace. However a vey tight pack developed which was terrific early in the race. This pack contained six or seven guys and one gal who we eventually led to the winner’s circle. The pack fell into a 6.30-640 type groove, which was a tad faster than the original plan but I was monitoring the way I was feeling very closely and I felt extremely relaxed. The goal finish time was 2.03.36 and I ended up running 1.58.43. Mile markers were hit and miss with some short and some long but the overall course is certified accurate. I placed 21/746 and 2nd in my age group….
My running systems felt great, my working muscles and my pulmonary systems but I developed intestinal problems around mile 6. I cannot go into details in a public profile blog but let me say I had to take care of business in a race in a way that I never ever have before and hope to never have to again. This helped me to the finish where I was picking people off and still felt relaxed. So the recap is hopefully the intestinal stuff was a ‘one off’ but as far as the run goes, it gives me confidence that with a little more patience early on I may be able to take a shot at the sub 3 hour mark in New York. It should be noted that I trained right through this race with a hard 1 mile and 2 mile repeat track session the day before.
